Paula Russo Sughrue's Run for Lovelane

One of the many common interests that our agents share is a desire to give back to our communities and to make a difference. And we've all certainly learned that when we do, we really end up receiving so much more! We'd like to thank Paula Russo Sughrue for sharing a recent experience she had with a truly life changing organization:

Earlier this summer, I had the pleasure of joining 500 other runners in the 9th annual Susan McDaniel Run for Lovelane. This professionally timed race is challenging enough for elite runners but welcoming and enjoyable for families, walkers, and even strollers. The 5K race starts at the Weston Town Green and makes its way along the beautiful neighborhoods in Weston, Massachusetts with friendly homeowners along the way providing much-needed water to the runners.

Paula Sughrue, her niece, Olivia, and Paula's daughter, Madeline.

Lovelane provides high-quality, therapeutic horseback riding to achieve therapeutic gains to children with special needs. This fun and supportive environment has been an integral part of my niece, Olivia's amazing progress over the past eight years. She thoroughly enjoys her weekly horseback rides with the special attention from the licensed therapeutic riding instructors. Some other activities present a physical challenge to Olivia, but with horseback riding she's on top of the world and so proud of herself!  It's heartwarming for her family to know that she's experiencing this much joy.

My children and I have been part of this wonderful fundraiser for the past 3 years. Olivia's team is named Team Trots and is pictured above. Her team grows each year. Her parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins all come out to show their support for her and this important program. Let me know if you want to join Team Trots next year. All are welcome!  The atmosphere of young and old Lovelane supporters is so inspiring.

Getting to Know Your REALTOR

There has been a lot written and said about choosing the right Realtor. Whether you're buying or selling it's vitally important that your REALTOR is someone with whom you can work effectively. Intelligence, ethics, strong communication and negotiation skills, and local knowledge are just a few traits to look for when getting to know your REALTOR. At a conference a while back, a speaker was discussing ours is one of the few professions where potential clients decide to work with us based on whether or not we're someone they'd like to hang around with. That got us thinking; we're pretty great! We're intelligent, funny, strategic, self-effacing, and knowledgeable. We are good listeners and strong speakers. Above all we advocate, advocate, advocate. We actually do have lives away from Real Estate that shape our opinions and guide our advocacy. We champion causes and belong to the PTO. We're wives, husbands, sons, daughters, and parents. We thought it would be helpful for you to get to know us. And maybe hang around with us?

This week, we're launching Getting to Know Your Realtor, a chance for members of our team to stand up and blog a little about ourselves and our lives in and out of Real Estate. Today, we'd like you to meet Jacqui Curtin.

Jacqui On May 3rd of this year, The Winchester Friends of VNA Hospice Care celebrated its 19th year of fundraising by generating over $100,000 in at the annual Dine Around event held this year that the Winchester Country Club. The Dine Around is known for its auction hosted by radio & TV host Billy Costa featuring spectacular items, services, and destinations contributed by our generous community of local businesses and residents. Mr. Costa entertained over 250 guests facilitating the auction off featured items including a trip to Paris & a pair of diamond earrings! Net proceeds of Dine Around will help to provide Open Access to our neighbors in need of End-of-Life care. VNA Hospice Care has been providing care, comfort and support to patients and families since 1979. VNA Hospice Care provides patients with the opportunity to live their life to the last moment with dignity and free of pain. Family members and friends VNA Hospice Care provides comfort and guidance to accompany their loved one on this ultimate journey. Along with comfort and care, they provide expert Pain & Symptom Management and specific programs for individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, Alzheimers/Dementia, Cardio & Pulmonary diseases, and Cancer. As a REALTOR, we often highlight the tangible features of Winchester, such as our charming downtown, proximity to Boston with convenient commuter rail options, and of course the great performance of our schools. While these features are an integral part of Winchester, it is the intangible attributes of our community that make us great. But thats not what makes Winchester great. It is the intangible traits of our community that make us want to raise our family, establish roots for generations, and make us so proud to say Im from Winchester. Events like Dine Around give us the opportunity to highlight these intangibles. When youre buying a home, youre really buying into a community. The Winchester Friends of VNA Hospice Care is just one of many organizations that make Winchester the unique town that it is.. A small town with a big heart. As co-chair of the Dine Around event, I am thrilled to know that this annual event will make a real difference in helping a person without insurance to be able to receive a $1,000 chemo treatment, or a $170 basic in-home daily care service. Below is a blog from Shanahan Real Estate Group's Lulu Coakley about her participation in running the Tufts 10K for women this past Columbus Day.
Thanks, Lulu

From Left to Right: Katie Kennedy of Marshfield, Lulu Coakley and Courtney Peters of Winchester

This past Monday, October 8th, I had the pleasure of joining 8000 other runners in the 36th Annual Tufts Healthplan 10K roadrace for women. The race inspires women of all ages and athletic abilities and is a celebration of women's health and fitness. The race attacts all types - elite world-class athletes, casual weekend runners, walkers, groups of friends, colleagues, and multi-generational families.
The 10K race course makes its way along the Charles River, back through Boston's Back Bay, and finishes up at the Boston Common. This year, Tufts Health Plan will make a $10,000 cash grant to The Family Van, which provides compassionate curbside cares in urban neighborhoods through its mobile clinics. The Family Van supports preventing screening, testing, and education for thousands of people each year. I had heard from friends that the race was fantastic and they sure were right! It was so inspiring to see so many women of all ages out there enjoying the perfect Fall weather, the scenic race course, their groups of friends, and achieving their fitness goals.
It was a perfect way to spend Columbus Day... I better keep running so I can do it again next year!

Shanahan Real Estate Group of Winchester, MA was a proud sponsor of the Winchester Hospital One Shining Night Gala held on December 3rd at the Westin Waterfront in Boston. It was a beautiful night with everyone dressed in formal attire and raising money for a great cause. The MC opened with a real estate joke, which we particularly enjoyed, and we danced the night away to an amazing band. It was a wonderful way to support the hospital and all they do while enjoying an evening with clients, friends and colleagues. It is an event we sponsor every year and are very proud to be a part of.

Thank You for a successful first annual Turkey Trot for Kids!

We would also like to extend a big Thank You to all of the runners and their parents for participating in this great event. These toys will be donated to children hospitalized over the holidays by the Bridget Brigade. The collection box will be in our office through December 13th. Gobble Gobble!

Winchester joins the fight to end Alzheimer's

Shanahan Real EstateGroup joins the town of Winchester in the fightto end Alzheimer's.

Our Town of Winchester

Its amazing how a good thought materialized into the founding local chapter of the Alzheimers Association. This is exactly what a group of residents from Winchester did. Jon McCafferty and Donna von Halle were the catalyst in organizing and recruiting team captains. On Sunday, September 25th over 100 residents from our town joined in the Walk to End Alzheimers held in Boston along the Charles River. As one of the team captains, I asked my fellow associates to join me in this most worthy cause. The Shanahan Real Estate Group stepped right up and joined into the raising of donations, adding moral support, and walking the walk! Our team raised $1,600. In all, there were over 100 walkers from this founding Winchester chapter. The spirit of giving in time and donations and support of our families made this a very rewarding day for all of us. Our Shanahan Real Estate Group was also able to keep our office open for business on the Sunday of the walk and also host open houses for some of our listings. What a great office to associate with. Borrowing a statement from a recent Boston Globe article, one in every 8 people over age 65 will have this devastating disease. - Mary Price, Shanahan Real Estate Group Thank you to Shanahan Real Estate Group's Mary Price for contributing this blog and spearheading the efforts from our office for the walk.

Paula Sughrue's Summer Fun in Winchester

Winchester Center

Winchester offers many great summer activities. Enjoy!

Our agents at Shanahan Real Estate Group are really active in Winchester and our neighboring communities. Below is a contribution from Paula Sughrue, one of our agents and a Winchester native, on some fun summer activities in town. Enjoy! With summer in full swing and the kids home from school there are many community activities offered in Winchester, Massachusetts that are worth checking out. Here are just a few that I would highly recommend:

FARMER'S MARKET

The Winchester Farmer's Market is an enjoyable community activity that takes place every Saturday from 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM, May thru October, on the Town Common. The Farmer's Market provides Winchester residents and neighboring communities an opportunity to buy locally grown food from farmers, handmade food providers, artisans, local businesses and non-profits. The market also aims to educate the community about the nutritional and environmental implications of the food we eat. This topic is near and dear to my heart since I am constantly trying to provide my four children with healthy food options. It's not an easy task since TV commercials and colorful labels on cereals and other unhealthy food products constantly attract their attention. The Farmer's Market is a small step my family can take into buying and learning the benefits of nutritious, locally grown food. There is also entertainment so be sure to bring a blanket to relax and enjoy. For more information on the Winchester Farmer's Market visit www.winchesterfarmersmarket.org.

CONCERTS ON THE COMMON

Concerts on the Common in Winchester is a free activity offered throughout the summer and are held on Wednesday nights from 7:00 - 9:00 PM on the Town Common. There is a schedule posted on Winchester Patch. I recommend you print this and hang it on your fridge; your kids will remind you when its Wednesday because they will not want to miss out! The concerts are a chance for families to picnic on the green grass and enjoy a variety of musical acts. There is usually lots of dancing for the young ones that the musicians encourage. My family has thoroughly enjoyed the concerts over the years. These are just a couple of the many community activities that Winchester, Massachusetts has to offer. You will get more enjoyment from the town if you immerse yourself into the community events. You will learn more about this historic town, strengthen relationships with friends and lay the groundwork for your children to feel connected to the town that will play a large part in their early years. My husband and I feel so blessed to have grown up in Winchester and can only hope that our children will share some of the same great memories we experienced as kids. To learn more about Paula or to contact her, please visit her bio page. Thanks, Paula!
