Better Homes and Gardens The Shanahan Group joins Rebuilding Together Boston for National Work Day

It’s time to get the band back (Rebuilding) Together!  We’re so excited to be just over a week away from our second annual Rebuilding Together Boston Work Day!

Team Shanahan

Not surprisingly, we’re passionate about home ownership.  So much so, that we’re willing to put our money - and our talents - where are mouths are.  In addition to our company donations, each member of our team, has individually donated the money used to purchase the needed supplies to bring necessary health and safety improvements one deserving person’s home.  Then we really get to work!

This year, rather than having the day all to ourselves, we’re participating in Rebuilding Together’s National Rebuilding Day!  Just within the 3-4 block radius of our work site, there will be more than ten additional teams working on other projects.  What an exciting opportunity to bring life and value back to an entire community and improve the life of a deserving homeowner! And have so much fun doing it!

Helping with Friends

This year, we are again partnering with our friends at G&N Insurance and The Shant Banosian Team at Guaranteed Rate Mortgage and additionally welcome the expertise and know-how of JP Walsh Plumbing and Heating of Medford and carpenter, Mark Bronakant.

The Shanahan team consists of returning Rebuilders Nan and Rich Shanahan, our captain, Caroline Staudt, Karen Garrett, Rebecca Brennan-Laird, Stephanie Walsh, Christine Curtin, and our chief parger (yeah, we didn't know what it was, either), Felicity Tuttle.  First-time Rebuilders include Paula Buono, Cheryl Priplata, and Dara Singleton.

Hope you enjoy the snaps from last year’s Work Day.  At the end, we were tired, dirty, and gratified to know we had helped improve a homeowner’s life.  If you’re interested in becoming involved with Rebuilding Together, please visit their Boston or national site.

Getting to Know your REALTOR

Welcome to Part 2 of our ongoing series, Getting to Know Your REALTOR, a chance for members of our team to stand up and blog a little about ourselves and our lives in and out of Real Estate. We're happy to introduce, Rebecca Brennan-Laird. If asked to describe Rebecca, we'd use "kind, knowledgeable, and ENERGETIC." But we'll let you hear it straight from her... About Me Rebecca I like to help people. It is in my nature and one of the reasons I love being a Realtor. And I have the best clients! I get to know them and their families and be a part of a major event in their lives. The reasons for moving are many - buying a first home, getting married, job relocation, having a baby, having another baby, empty nesting, moving to a warmer climate, losing a parent or spouse. And moving can be stressful (even the happy events can be stressful!). It is my job to make this transition as painless and stress free as possible. I am the current President of the Rotary Club of Winchester. The Rotary Motto is Service Above Self (did I mention I like to help people?) The Rotary Club just had its annual Golf Tournament at the Winchester Country Club and its annual Pancake Breakfast at the McCall Middle School. We raise money to help our community, our country and our world. I am very proud of what we accomplish as an organization and look forward to many more years of Rotary Service. Inducting three new Rotarians: Rotary Rebecca I am also a long distance runner. My most recent race was the Cape Cod Ragnar. Over 300 relay teams ran the 36 hour 192 mile race that started in Hull, MA and ended in Provincetown, MA. My team consisted of twelve runaway brides and a whole lotta fun! My Runaway Bride Relay Team: Running Rebecca I live in Winchester, MA with my wonderful husband, two handsome teenage boys, and two lovable Labrador retrievers. Rebecca's Dogs

Getting to Know Your REALTOR

There has been a lot written and said about choosing the right Realtor. Whether you're buying or selling it's vitally important that your REALTOR is someone with whom you can work effectively. Intelligence, ethics, strong communication and negotiation skills, and local knowledge are just a few traits to look for when getting to know your REALTOR. At a conference a while back, a speaker was discussing ours is one of the few professions where potential clients decide to work with us based on whether or not we're someone they'd like to hang around with. That got us thinking; we're pretty great! We're intelligent, funny, strategic, self-effacing, and knowledgeable. We are good listeners and strong speakers. Above all we advocate, advocate, advocate. We actually do have lives away from Real Estate that shape our opinions and guide our advocacy. We champion causes and belong to the PTO. We're wives, husbands, sons, daughters, and parents. We thought it would be helpful for you to get to know us. And maybe hang around with us?

This week, we're launching Getting to Know Your Realtor, a chance for members of our team to stand up and blog a little about ourselves and our lives in and out of Real Estate. Today, we'd like you to meet Jacqui Curtin.

Jacqui On May 3rd of this year, The Winchester Friends of VNA Hospice Care celebrated its 19th year of fundraising by generating over $100,000 in at the annual Dine Around event held this year that the Winchester Country Club. The Dine Around is known for its auction hosted by radio & TV host Billy Costa featuring spectacular items, services, and destinations contributed by our generous community of local businesses and residents. Mr. Costa entertained over 250 guests facilitating the auction off featured items including a trip to Paris & a pair of diamond earrings! Net proceeds of Dine Around will help to provide Open Access to our neighbors in need of End-of-Life care. VNA Hospice Care has been providing care, comfort and support to patients and families since 1979. VNA Hospice Care provides patients with the opportunity to live their life to the last moment with dignity and free of pain. Family members and friends VNA Hospice Care provides comfort and guidance to accompany their loved one on this ultimate journey. Along with comfort and care, they provide expert Pain & Symptom Management and specific programs for individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, Alzheimers/Dementia, Cardio & Pulmonary diseases, and Cancer. As a REALTOR, we often highlight the tangible features of Winchester, such as our charming downtown, proximity to Boston with convenient commuter rail options, and of course the great performance of our schools. While these features are an integral part of Winchester, it is the intangible attributes of our community that make us great. But thats not what makes Winchester great. It is the intangible traits of our community that make us want to raise our family, establish roots for generations, and make us so proud to say Im from Winchester. Events like Dine Around give us the opportunity to highlight these intangibles. When youre buying a home, youre really buying into a community. The Winchester Friends of VNA Hospice Care is just one of many organizations that make Winchester the unique town that it is.. A small town with a big heart. As co-chair of the Dine Around event, I am thrilled to know that this annual event will make a real difference in helping a person without insurance to be able to receive a $1,000 chemo treatment, or a $170 basic in-home daily care service. Winchester joins the fight to end Alzheimer's

Shanahan Real EstateGroup joins the town of Winchester in the fightto end Alzheimer's.

Our Town of Winchester

Its amazing how a good thought materialized into the founding local chapter of the Alzheimers Association. This is exactly what a group of residents from Winchester did. Jon McCafferty and Donna von Halle were the catalyst in organizing and recruiting team captains. On Sunday, September 25th over 100 residents from our town joined in the Walk to End Alzheimers held in Boston along the Charles River. As one of the team captains, I asked my fellow associates to join me in this most worthy cause. The Shanahan Real Estate Group stepped right up and joined into the raising of donations, adding moral support, and walking the walk! Our team raised $1,600. In all, there were over 100 walkers from this founding Winchester chapter. The spirit of giving in time and donations and support of our families made this a very rewarding day for all of us. Our Shanahan Real Estate Group was also able to keep our office open for business on the Sunday of the walk and also host open houses for some of our listings. What a great office to associate with. Borrowing a statement from a recent Boston Globe article, one in every 8 people over age 65 will have this devastating disease. - Mary Price, Shanahan Real Estate Group Thank you to Shanahan Real Estate Group's Mary Price for contributing this blog and spearheading the efforts from our office for the walk.

Serving our community- and having fun doing it!

While we are busy with a hectic spring market, the agents at Shanahan Real Estate Group are also attending some great Winchester events organized by groups that make up the fabric of our town. This was a busy week in town with several fun and important events taking place. Last Wednesday evening, several of us attended the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Dinner where over three hundred people came out to honor Charlie Price and Carl Boerner. Over the years, these men have dedicated coutless hours to extensive volunteer work, across several town organizations. It was a great opportunity to see the many people of this town who do so many good things that make Winchester such a special place to live. The next day was the combined lunch of members of the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. This well attended event was a great opportunity for the business people of Winchester to get together and listen to Mark Ockerbloom from Channel 25/FOX News.Mark is a native Winchesterite and he talked about how he got into the broadcasting business and has moved around but Winchester will always be home.

Shanahan Agents in the Winchester Community

WCMS Music MAYnia Trolley

AtShanahan Real Estate Group, it's important to be involved and support these worthwhile events. Most recently,Shanahan Real Estate Group co-sponsored the trolley for theWinchester Community Music School's Music MAYnia. All of our agents have commitments outside of work with groups that support various causes in Winchester and our neighboring communities. We believe in our community and contribute our time and skills to the groups that we hold close to our hearts, from environmental groups to civic organizations.Below are some of our agents' thoughts on the organizations that they individually support: From Mary Price, Winton Club As a member of Winton Club, I recently setup another "lobby sale" at Winchester Hospital for the week before Father's Day. Vendors bring in their wares and the Winton Shop receives a percentage of monies from their sales of that day. All proceeds from our lobby sales are included in the Winton Shop sizable donation made to the hospital each year. This coming year, I transition from lobby sale chairperson to gift buyer for the Winton Shop. Luckily, I have two other wonderful members working on gift buying with me, Carolyn Doyle, and Cheryl Laurintano. Again, all profits benefit the Winchester Hospital. From Karen Garrett, Family Action Network of Winchester I have been involved in this group since moving back to Winchester two years ago and just completed my first year on the board. I serve as a co-chair of the Membership Committee, with my very good friend (also a Winchester native). It is a great way to stay connected with other busy parents and to discuss issues that are important to all of us with young families. Many of my closest friends are also part of this organization and in my role, I get to meet many new Winchester families. It has been a satisfying and fun way to contribute to our community and spend some time with my family. From Felicity Tuttle, Winchester Multicultural Network and other groups I have loved being able to participate on the Board of the Winchester Multicultural Network which is so focused on culture, diversity, fairness, and advocating for people who come to us seeking assistance. This has been an important connection between my interest in bringing to Winchester people from many cultures who further enrich the breadth of our community. Similarly, volunteering on the Winchester Housing Partnership Board helps fulfill my interest and hope that by creating more affordable housing we can enable more families with limited resources to become renting and home-owning town residents. Leading Winchester Trails walks to expand the nature education of our 4th and 5th graders in town enables me to stay in touch with a number of those eager young faces I miss as my children are now adults. Volunteering in each of these areas is truly as much of a gift to myself as a possible benefit to others! May and June are always busy months for town events, with many favorites happening in the coming weeks. Next weekend is the EnKa Fair, followed by Town Day on the 4th of June. These are such great, long running town events with many activities for kids and adults. Check out ourtown calendar page for a list of events that we enjoy.
