Reading has the feel of a small New England town, with Old South Church overlooking the spacious green common at the center of town. First settled in 1639, the town was incorporated in 1644, and celebrated its 350th anniversary in 1994. Many volunteer boards, committees and commissions assist an elected board of selectmen and a representative town meeting in governing the town. The town manager is responsible for day-to-day operations of the local government.
